Seneschalstown 7-13 Wolfe Tones 1-09
It may have been Round 3 of the League but strangely this was Seneschalstown’s initial foray into the U-17 League for 2016 due to a combination of receiving a walkover from one game and the referee not showing up for another. With this in mind an element of rustiness may have been expected in their performance but this proved to not be the case as they turned in a very slick showing against what was admittedly an understrength Wolfe Tones side.

It may have been Round 3 of the League but strangely this was Seneschalstown’s initial foray into the U-17 League for 2016 due to a combination of receiving a walkover from one game and the referee not showing up for another. With this in mind an element of rustiness may have been expected in their performance but this proved to not be the case as they turned in a very slick showing against what was admittedly an understrength Wolfe Tones side.
The early exchanges didn’t give the impression that this would be an easy win for the hosts as with twelve minutes gone the teams were level at three points apiece, Robert Wogan with two frees as well as an Alan Mulvany point for Seneschalstown while the Tones had two from play and one from a free. Indeed, the visitors could have had a three point lead only for Keith Waters to pull off a smart early stop to keep his goal intact. Cathal Finnegan opened his account on thirteen minutes when he popped over a free before very soon after being felled as he latched onto a pass resulting in a penalty which Dylan Keating expertly dispatched passed the goalkeeper.
The hardworking Sean Carey then tagged on a point when he got his radar working as he got on the end of good play from Richie McKeown, Robert Wogan and Dylan Keating. Wolfe Tones replied with two points from play but Cathal Finnegan then lit up the venue with a stunning goal which had to be seen to be believed as he showed an incredible combination of audacity and talent to score it. This paved the way for Seneschalstown to dominate the remainder of the half as they reeled off a succession of points from Richie McKeown, Cillian Gormley and Alan Mulvany while Joseph Moore stole in for a goal.
The second half began in much the same manner with Finnegan cheekily tapping in a Mulvany shot which seemed destined for the net. Robert Wogan kicked two brilliant points with a Daire Finnegan goal sandwiched in the middle. Finnegan picked the ball up deep in his own defence, galloped forward, exchanged passes with Dylan Keating before cutting inside and showing great strength to brush off a series of tackles, kept running and drilled his shot low and hard into the corner for a very well taken goal.
To their credit Wolfe Tones kept plugging away and kicked a great goal of their own but in reply Sean Commons picked off two points from play. The ever alert Keith Waters parried over a Wolfe Tones goal effort on fifty minutes. Substitute James Commons then showed his clinical nature when he expertly rolled a goal past the goalie, a score followed by a Cathal Finnegan point. Wolfe Tones did finish the match off with two points but there can be no doubt but they missed their absent stars.
Best for Seneschalstown were Robert Wogan, Sean Carey and Cathal Finnegan.
