Feis Cup Round 1
Seneschalstown 6-13 Rathkenny 1-07
On an ideal evening for a game of football Seneschalstown and Rathkenny served up a game which may have lacked some intensity but which had a plethora of scores with many of these being from the top drawer. With both sides missing key members this was an opportunity for players to stake their claim for a starting berth later on in the season.
Seneschalstown got themselves off to a flying start when they scored 1-01 inside the first five minutes before Rathkenny hit three of their own to edge a point in front. Bryan Clarke opened the scoring when receiving a layoff from Joe Sheridan after he had broken a long ball in from Brian Sheridan and then driving the ball low into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Joe then registered his first of the game when pointing after receiving a pass from Ciaran Macken. The men from the opposite side of the Boyne hit back with two points before scoring a goal from play to edge a point ahead.
Two minutes later Brian Sheridan placed the ball beyond the despairing dive of the Rathkenny goalkeeper from a penalty after a foul on Ross Howard. Joe extended the Seneschalstown lead to three after a five minute period without a score when raising the white flag before scoring his first goal after he had fielded a long delivery from Brian. This score coming in response to another Rathkenny point from play.
Sheridan continued to impress and he played a fine cross field ball to wing back Mark Carey who split the posts after sidestepping his marker before the full forward registered another goal after gathering a pass from Howard. Ciaran Macken then got his name on the score sheet when palming in a pass across the square from Sheridan before Damien Sheridan added his name to the list of scorers when picking off a point.
Rathkenny stopped the rot on twenty seven minutes with a pointed free before Bryan Clarke popped over a free after being fouled himself after latching onto a ball knocked down by Sheridan after a diagonal ball in from Carey to leave the half time score reading Seneschalstown 5-05 Rathkenny 1-04 with both sides having kicked four wides.
The Joe Sheridan show continued apace as the second half commenced and within the first three minutes he had scored a point as well as earning a free for Clarke to convert. His point arrived after good build up work from Howard and Clarke. On thirty six minutes Rathkenny registered their fifth point of the match when scoring a free before Sheridan hit a rasping drive off the crossbar. Clarke then showed his expertise at long range frees when he split the posts at the railway end of the ground from fifty metres before adding another in response to a pointed effort from a Rathkenny midfielder which bounced over the bar.
With some of the earlier goals having come as a result of accurately placed long balls the sixth of the game came when Howard carried the ball half the length of the pitch before avoiding a couple of tackles and slotting the ball into the back of the net. Clarke then scored a point from play from a very narrow angle out on the right before two points from Joe Sheridan and one from Niall Groome, up from his corner back berth, as well as one from Rathkenny closed out the scoring.
