Meath Ladies Minor Football Championship
Clann na Gael 2-11 Seneschalstown 2-12
Despite trailing by seven points, Seneschalstown put in a superb second half performance to overcome a strong Clan Na Gael challenge in Rathcairn on Sunday evening.
The home team were first off the mark but Chrystal Delamere soon equalised with a point from play as the early exchanges were even. The Athboy outfit began to get the upper hand and scored three unanswered points. Kiah Geraghty then popped over a free and Chloe Williams playing in an unfamiliar half forward roll got in on the scoring act with a point from play.
The home team upped the tempo again and scored two goals in quick succession and followed this up with another point. Coming up to half time the Seneschalstown girls were getting the upper hand around the middle but a number of wides didn’t help the cause with a Kiah Geraghty free being the only reward leaving the HT score at 2-05 to 0-04.
The halftime team talk and a few positional switches had the desired effect as like she did in the first half Delamere opened the scoring with a point from play. Next on the score sheet was Eve Loughran who had switched from her half back role and the returning Lauren Kelleher who entered the fray at half time, swung over a fine point from the right.
The fighting spirit was very evident now as every ball was vigorously contested for and although the home team tagged on two points Kiah Geraghty replied with a point from play. Seneschalstown were putting some fine moves together and entering the third quarter Kiah Geraghty finished off one of those moves finding the back of the Gaels net and then Delamere equalised the game with ten minutes left.
Katie Geraghty then put the Furze girls in front for the first time but the home team responded and tagged on a few points to go back in front but points from Kiah Geraghty and Delamere levelled things up again and the game was in the melting pot now. The home side went in front again nearing the end but the all-important score came when Kelleher pounced to score the decisive goal, soccer style as the ball broke to her.
Going into injury time the home team cut the deficit to the minimum but the Seneschalstown defence held firm to ensure an opening round victory in a very entertaining and exiting game as both teams gave it their all in a very sporting game.
Best for Seneschalstown were Aoife Lenehan, Orla McMahon and Chrystal Delamere.
