Meath Ladies U-15 Division 2 Championship Round 4

Oldcastle 2-10 Seneschalstown 1-12

There was heartbreak in Millbrook for the Girls U-15’s as they lost out by the minimum margin to Oldcastle in this Rd. 4 Championship game played under floodlights.

In injury time and the scores level, Oldcastle went on the attack for the lead score and were thwarted by a brilliant block down by Leanne Clarke only for the referee to award a free to the home team much to the consternation of the Seneschalstown side, which was scored. Seneschalstown had a chance to equalise in the dying moments but Katie Geraghty’s effort just tailed the wrong side of the post at the last second as it looked destined to go between posts when the ball left her boot.

From the off this game looked like it would be a titanic struggle and Shona Loughran opened the scoring in the second minute. A good move involving Loughran and Aoife Lenehan paved the way for Aoife Mulvany to lay the ball off to Caradh Monaghan who made no mistake with a low shot to the corner of the net in the fourth minute. The home team’s response was quick and on the fifth minute cut the deficit with their first goal. Kelly Smith then pointed a free in the eight minute following a hard won free by Chrystal Delamere with Lenehan again involved in the build-up. Monaghan added to her tally with a point from play in the eleventh minute. Oldcastle pointed from a free on eighteen minutes before Delamere added two quick fire points in the twentieth and twenty first minutes.

Oldcastle got a bit of a foothold on the game coming up to the break and scored 1-04 between the twenty third and twenty ninth minutes as well as kicking a number of wides. Katie Geraghty completed the scoring with a point from play on thirty minutes to leave the home team leading 2-05 to 1-06 at the break.

Smith opened the scoring for the Seneschalstown girls in the second half with a point in the thirty first minute and added a second point to tie the game up on thirty eight minutes. Oldcastle edged back in front in the thirty ninth minute. Gough tied the scores up again in the forty fifth minute with a free following a foul on Mulvany and a minute later Delamere had the Furze girls in front again. Gough increased the lead to two points on fifty minutes but the away team were also very wasteful kicking a good number of wides. Oldcastle cut the deficit in the fifty first minute and were level four minutes later. Oldcastle went back in front in the fifty eight minute but Gough kept her cool to equalise in the last minute of normal time.

A draw at this stage would probably have been a fair result but a twist of fate was to cause heart break and bemusement among the girls at the late decision which deprived them of a deserved share of the spoils.

The game was played in a good spirit and both teams deserved credit for their efforts.
