Minor Football Summer League Division B2 Round 3

St. Patrick’s 2-08 Seneschalstown 3-15

Having started out their Summer League with an impressive win over Summerhill before slipping to a disappointing defeat at the hands of Blackwater Gaels in Drumbaragh Seneschalstown’s Minors bounced back to winning ways on Friday evening when overcoming the challenge of St. Patrick’s in Stamullen when winning by ten points. This victory was built upon a solid foundation which was laid over the course of the opening half at the end of which they led by 2-10 to 0-02.

Over the course of this thirty minutes led by Niall Hickey and Colin Walsh at the back who were outstanding and with Robert Wogan leading the forward line impressively from the forty Seneschalstown played some excellent football despite the tricky conditions caused by a crossfield wind.

The visitors to Stamullen got off to a blistering start and with only ten minutes on the clock had forged into a seven point advantage, 1-04 to 0-00. Robert Wogan got the ball rolling when pointing after two minutes after getting on the end of good play from Alan Mulvany before a minute later his side were boosted with the scoring of their first goal. Niall Hickey did brilliantly in defence to secure possession before storming out of his full back line with the ball. Dylan Keating was picked out and after he carried the ball forward before drawing the last defender and picking out Eoin Finnegan, Finnegan saw his shot saved before Keating swept the rebound home. Eoin Finnegan soon added a brace of points, one from a free, either side of Robert Wogan’s second.

On sixteen minutes Wogan added another before two points in just over a minute were registered, the first of which came from a Ryan O’Dowd free and the second from play by Shane Mulvany as Seneschalstown threatened to run riot. St. Patrick’s though eventually opened their account after twenty minutes when pointing from play before Seneschalstown immediately hit back when Ryan O’Dowd split the posts after getting on the end of a well worked move involving Shane Mulvany, Richard McKeown and the Carey brothers, Sean and Adam. Ryan O’Dowd hit another a few minutes later before Dylan Doyle, after making a spectacular catch from a St. Patrick’s kickout sent over a superb point which dropped just over the crossbar. The scores were coming thick and fast and next to arrive was goal number two when after Sean Carey had done very well out on the left to get the ball to Eoin Finnegan who in turn floated a teasing ball in front of the St. Patrick’s goal where Robert Wogan audaciously scooped the ball over the advancing goalkeepers head to score the cheekiest of goals. Then on the stroke of half time the home side registered their second point of the game when sending a forty five between the posts to leave the score at the interval reading Seneschalstown 2-10 St. Patrick’s 0-02.

Upon the resumption St. Patrick’s were quickest out of the blocks, hitting a brace of points and were unfortunate not to goal when Ruairí McDonagh pulled off a fine stop to keep his goal intact. Sean Carey got his side off the mark for the half when getting on the end of a move involving Colin Walsh, Alan Mulvany and Robert Wogan before the younger Mulvany emulated his U-15 teammate when picking off a point of his own.

The home side hit two further points before the U-15 attacking triumvirate of Dylan Keating, Alan Mulvany and Sean Carey linked up impressively before Carey hit his second point. Next up for Seneschalstown was to be their third goal of the game and Robert Wogan’s second when after Eoin Finnegan sent a raking long ball in the direction of the St. Patrick’s goal Wogan once more showed his predatory instincts when getting on the end of it and slotting into the bottom right corner of the net.

To the immense credit of the Stamullen side who were short of numbers for the game they never gave up and went on to hit four of the next five scores, two of which were majors. In the midst of this run of scores Eoin Finnegan pointed a free before at the end of this scoring run Dylan Keating sent over a beautiful point to bring the games scoring to a close.

This was a very impressive display from Seneschalstown who throughout the game played a lovely attacking style of football and with the four U-15’s who fielded, Daire Finnegan, Alan Mulvany, Dylan Keating and Sean Carey, all performing well alongside their older teammates such as the aforementioned trio of Niall Hickey, Colin Walsh and Robert Wogan this augurs well for the teams and indeed the clubs future.
