Meath Ladies Division 5 League

Seneschalstown 2-15 Gael Colmcille 3-05

After a number of false starts the Seneschalstown Junior ladies finally got to start their Div. 5 league campaign with this victory over Gael Colmcille in Fr Tully Park. Fielding a nice blend of youth and experience, the Furze girls set about the task right from the off and Aoife Sheehy opened the scoring with a point from play in the second minute.

Indeed, for most of the first quarter the home team played some excellent football and increased their lead in the 3rd minute when Sheehy pointed again. A minute later Chrystal Delamere opened her account. The Gael Colmcille girls began to find their feet and cut the deficit to the minimum with points in the fifth and eight minutes. In the ninth minute Sheehy got the home team’s first goal and two minutes later Delamere added a second goal. Shauna Fitzgerald was next on the score sheet with two points in as many minutes.

The visitors then hit 1-02 between the fourteenth and sixteenth minute to cut the deficit to four points. Points in the final ten minutes from Kelly Smith, Fitzgerald (2) and Delamere had the home team deservedly leading 2-09 to 1-04 at the break. The margin could have been greater but the crossbar was struck three times and the Gael Colmcille net minder made some decent saves.

When the second half resumed, it took five minutes for the first score when Orla Finnegan struck over fine point and Fitzgerald added another in the ninth minute. Sheehy added to her tally coming up to the three-quarter stage but the North Meath outfit tagged on 2-01 in quick succession. Fitzgerald then added to her tally with another point which was soon followed by a fine run a shot from Lauren Donnelly.

The last 10 minutes didn’t yield many scores as both teams were tiring and the last score went to Aoife Mulvany who pointed to seal the 7 point win.

Next up for the team is a trip to Clonard for round 3 on Sunday April 23rd at 12.15.
