Seneschalstown overcame the strong challenge of Wolfe Tones in this Round 3 encounter played in Kentstown.
The home side started well and Robyn Murray opened the scoring with a fine goal from play. Next up on the scoreboard for the home side was Abby Hewitt with a fine point from play from the right after the forwards had turned over possession. The Tones opened their account from a free and the Seneschalstown rear guard of Amy Kennedy, Tara Traynor, Maebh Hickey and Aly Clarke were working hard to repel the Tones attacks. Behind them Megan Clarke in an unfamiliar role as keeper handled well and drove the team forward with her long kicks.
At midfield the Murray Twins, Robyn and Charlie and Kellie Stafford were having a Ding Dong battle with their direct opponents and chipping in with a point apiece. Hewitt added to her tally with another fine point after beating her marker before popping the ball over and Tara Traynor also got on the score sheet with a point from a free. The forwards of Hewitt, Nicola Mongey, Holly Knowles, Niamh Mulvany along with substitutes Orla Lynch and Claire Finnegan deserve credit for tackling high up the pitch and not letting the Tones out easily. The HT score was 1-5 to 0-1 to the Furze Girls after an excellent first half where the only complaint was the shower of rain and hailstones just before the break.
The second half began with the introduction of Kerri Laverty, Carley Lynch and Lauren McGuirk who was making her competitive debut. Again both teams gave everything and 5 points shared between the Murray Twins and Nicola Mongey were countered by 4 points from the Tones girls in the second period.
Both teams deserve great credit for their efforts and both teams showed a good level of skill and ability.
Best for Seneschalstown were Abby Hewitt, Kellie Stafford and Maebh Hickey.
