St. Patrick’s unbeaten run came to an end against a strong Seneschalstown outfit on Saturday evening in Donore in the third round of the junior B championship.
In what proved to be a highly entertaining game, there was very little between the teams in the first half. Fergus Minogue (0-02), Stephen McLoughlin and McKenna kept St. Pats in touch with fine points as Seneschalstown threatened to pull away early on. The Pats defence came under intense pressure but held firm and with Martin McKenna and Niall Black holding their own in the middle of the park, it was all to play for at half time with Pats trailing by two points 0-06 v 0-04.
It was St. Patrick’s who started the second half brighter and scored two points to level the game at 0-06 each. Both teams traded points and shortly after David Eakin was put through on goal by Fergus Minogue only to be cynically taken down by a defender who was subsequently booked. The Pats forwards were causing all sorts of problems at this stage but did not get the scores to match their dominant possession. A 10 minute purple patch for Seneschalstown followed which yielded 2-03 without reply and that was game over for St. Patricks although they did finish the game strongly with 2 points.
The St. Patricks team never gave up and continued to compete bravely until the final whistle with David Stafford, Colin Folan, Martin McKenna, Fergus Minogue and Stephen McLoughlin showing well throughout.
