Seneschalstown’s second string recorded their first championship win with this defeat of a gallant Drumbaragh outfit in sunny Fr Tully Park on Thursday evening.
The home team were out of the blocks quickly and Lucinda Healy opened the scoring inside the first minute and seconds later cousin Kelly Smith split the posts. Next on the score sheet was Roisin Commons who unleashed a superb shot to the back of the net in the third minute to give the Furze ladies a great start. Smith added to her tally in the seventh minute and 3 minutes later Healy scored the home team’s second goal. Further points from Commons, Healy, Grainne Gordon, Aoife Lenehan and Shirley Quinn between the thirteenth and twenty fourth minutes kept the scoreboard ticking over regularly.
Quinn then added a major after her point attempt dropped directly into the net and Emer Smith closed the scoring with a point to leave the HT score at 3-9 to 0-0 at the break. The Drumbaragh ladies had some chances in the half but shot a few wides and some good defending foiled some scoring chances for the visitors. With Elaine Byrne getting injured in the warm up and Cathy Ann Cowley and Eve Loughran suffering injuries during the first half the strength of the squad was tested.
Drumbaragh had a great start to the second half and scored a goal within sixty seconds of the resumption. Points from Orla McMahon, Healy and Emer Smith cancelled out the Drumbaragh strike within three minutes and the winners increased their lead when first Kelly and then Emer Smith tagged on two further points in the sixth and seventh minutes. Healy who was having a fine game at full forward then added another point in the forty first minute. Drumbaragh kept going and were rewarded with 1-1 in quick succession in the forty third and forty fourth minutes.
Commons added second goal 3 minutes later before being replaced by Shona Loughran. In the last ten minutes the Drumbaragh ladies added 1-1 while Healy closed the scoring for the home team. The only down side was the number of injuries suffered by six of the squad on the night.
With a bye in the next round the next outing for the girls is a trip to Oldcastle on July 21st at 8pm.
