Seneschalstown 1-12 Dunshaughlin 1-14
Seneschalstown’s second string went down to their second defeat of the Premier Football Championship Division 1 when Dunshaughlin came to Fr. Tully Park on Monday evening. Just like the last round, numbers were tight for the hosts and in the end Dunshaughlin’s ability to bring in fresh legs was probably the decisive factor in swinging the game in their favour.

Seneschalstown’s second string went down to their second defeat of the Premier Football Championship Division 1 when Dunshaughlin came to Fr. Tully Park on Monday evening. Just like the last round, numbers were tight for the hosts and in the end Dunshaughlin’s ability to bring in fresh legs was probably the decisive factor in swinging the game in their favour.
On a dull evening for football, both sides lined out in their alternative jerseys, Seneschalstown in yellow and Dunshaughlin in red. To be fair to both sides, this was a close encounter throughout and offered decent entertainment to the crowd in attendance.
The visitors were the first off the mark with a brace of points from play. Seneschalstown settled into the game and were level thanks to Joe Sheridan and James Meade, who found his range with a free. Sheridan was in fine form early on and he kicked over two more points, one of which was a mark as the sides headed for the first water break on level terms. Sheridan continued to terrorise the Dunshaughlin rearguard, coming up with a fine goal after literally having to shrug off his direct marker and powering to the top corner of the net. Two Dunshaughlin points narrowed the gap to the minimum, before Sheridan closed out the scoring for the half with another white flag. Seneschalstown led by two at half time, 1-05 to 0-06.
Dunshaughlin made a strong start to the second half to put themselves ahead following an unanswered 1-02, the goal coming from a penalty despite the fact there was debate as to whether or not the foul took place inside or outside the large square. However, the pendulum swung back in favour of the Yellow Furze men when they hit five points on the spin to turn around a three point deficit. Robert Wogan began this spell with a free, and this was backed up by a point from rampaging centre half back Conor McDonnell who curled a lovely point between the posts. Wogan (free) levelled matters and then Shane Mulvany had Seneschalstown in front again at the water break with a point from 20 metres out. Wogan increased the lead at the start of the final quarter after a free was made easy as a result of some Dunshaughlin back chat to the referee.
The south Meath outfit though, had their own purple patch and swung over four points of their own to regain the lead. Indeed it could have been worse for the home side had David Gordon not pulled off a good save, and then Niall McCabe somehow spectacularly volleyed the rebounded effort off the line. Two Wogan frees kept Seneschalstown within a point but Dunshaughlin had an answer on both occasions to hold onto the lead and emerge with a two point victory. Seneschalstown did have a late goal chance when a Joe Sheridan 45’ bounced down off the post and across the goal line, and despite the best efforts of a number of Seneschalstown forwards the ball was deflected the wrong side of the post and wide.
