Seneschalstown were defeated in this Coca Cola Ladies Championship Round 3 clash as late goals snatched victory for the home team in Millbrook. Both teams had periods of supremacy and late goals in each half proved crucial to the outcome.
Oldcastle made a great start to the game and scored 1-01 in the opening two minutes. On three minutes Kiah Geraghty opened the scoring for the Seneschalstown girls with a point from play but this was cancelled out almost immediately as the home team led 1-02 to 0-01 inside the first five minutes. Unfortunately, the game was held up for the next four to five minutes following injury to an Oldcastle player which necessitated her being helped from the field.
On the resumption of play the home team increased their lead with another point. The Seneschalstown girls began to improve but wayward shooting wasn’t rewarding the girls from some fine approach play until Fiona O’Rourke opened her account in the nineteenth minute. This was cancelled out two minutes late by the home side. The following ten minutes was productive for the Seneschalstown side as Amy Gilsenan in the twenty third minute, Geraghty in the twenty seventh and Gilsenan again in the thirty first minutes had the sides level for the first time. Stacey Grimes the pushed the visitors in front with a point from a free in the thirty fourth minute but on the stroke of half time the Oldcastle girls struck their second goal to lead by two points at the break.
The opening exchanges of the second half were tight with both teams competing for every ball and it was Oldcastle who struck first blood of the half in the thirty fifth minute. The middle third of the half was very productive for the Seneschalstown girls with seven unanswered points for the fortieth to the fifty first minutes.
Natasha Mullen set the ball rolling with a point from play in the fortieth minute which was followed three minutes later with a point from Shona Loughran. O’Rourke added to her tally a minute later before Grimes popped over two frees in the forty sixth and seventh minutes. Gilsenan added her fourth point from play in the fiftieth minute and Mullen added her second a minute later. This was to prove to be the visitors last score and a goal from Oldcastle five minutes from normal time had the game in the melting pot.
Both teams were giving it their all and the Oldcastle defence had a lucky escape when Mullen drove her shot straight at the home team defender standing on the line after Louise Coyle had blocked down an attempted clearance. In the sixtieth minute an Oldcastle attempt at an equaliser struck the post and from the resulting rebound Oldcastle equalised. Both teams were going all out for a winner and the visitors had two attempts off target. Just as it looked like a draw would be the outcome, Oldcastle struck for a late goal in the thirty third minute to keep their unbeaten start to the championship.
Next up for the Seneschalstown girls is a home tie with Simonstown on Tuesday July 19th in Fr Tully Park at 8pm.
