Seneschalstown 1-13 Donaghamore/Ashbourne 2-13

A goal in injury proved decisive as Seneschalstown went down to Donaghamore/Ashourne in this well contested Kepak Ladies Senior Football Championship match in Fr Tully Park. This game was a great advert for ladies football with two evenly matched teams trading score for score over the 60 plus minutes.
It was the visitors who drew first blood inside the opening few minutes but this was cancelled out by Orla Finnegan from play. Donaghmore/Ashbourne would go ahead again but Seneschalstown rallied well and tagged on the next four points from Seanaidh Hickey and three from the industrious Tara Traynor by the midway point of the first half.
Ashbourne then hit a purple patch and knocked over the next 3 points to draw level by the 21st minute. Points from Caoimhe Dunne and Kelly Stafford had the home team back in front by the 25th minute. Ashbourne tagged on a point shortly afterwards and then got their fist goal just before the break to lead by two. Roisin Commons cut the deficit back to the minimum and the home team were unlucky when the ball came back off the crossbar on the stroke of haft time.
The second half begun with with the home team on the attack immediately and within 30 seconds had drawn level with a point from Orla Finnegan from close range. Anna Wogan, who had now moved to the forwards put the home team in front again. Kelly Stafford extended the lead with a well taken point but in keeping with the see saw nature of the game the Ashbourne girls hit back with two points of their own. Seneschalstown’s Donna Stafford was next on the score sheet with a well taken goal but again Ashbourne cut the deficit with two more points. In the 53rd minute Roisin Commons reacted quickest to a breaking ball from a Stafford free and drove the ball over the bar from close range. Asbourne cut the deficit to the minimum with two minutes remaining but the game was held up for a number of minutes following injury to Seneschalstown centre back Orla Garry.
In the 64th minute Ashbourne got the decisive score when finding the net for the second time and they added a close in free soon afterwards to close out the scoring.
Seneschalstown now move on to the quarter finals in two weeks time.
