A League Division 1B Round 4

Seneschalstown 1-07 Ballinabrackey 0-16

Seneschalstown made the long trip to Ballinabrackey on Saturday evening and eventually returned home with their tails firmly between their legs as a disastrous first half performance left them with too much to do in the second half. Despite an improvement after the break, there was to be no resurrection for the Yellow Furze men on this Easter weekend as Ballinabrackey comfortably strode to a six point victory.

On heavy underfoot conditions, the home side were aided by a significant breeze in the opening period and wasted little time getting into the groove, notching up seven points on the trot before Seneschalstown managed to trouble the scoreboard in the 23rd minute through a point from Rob Wogan from the centre of the ‘D’. Supporters would have hoped that this would settle the visitors somewhat, but the Bracks kicked another five points unanswered before the interval leaving them an incredible eleven points to the good at the short whistle.

The initial period of the second half looked as bleak for Seneschalstown as Ballinabrackey kicked the opening two scores of the half. With 20 minutes to go Seneschalstown finally started to establish some sort of foothold in the game. Firstly, Donie Commons used the wind to his full advantage pointing from distance. Half-time substitute Seán Carey, who certainly made a positive impact followed up with a very similar effort moments later. On 44 minutes, Seneschalstown struck for a goal. A Cathal Finnegan free dropped into the large square and it wasn’t dealt with by the home defence as James Meade picked the ball up and rifled to the top left corner as Seneschalstown continued to narrow the gap. Robbie Finnegan and Alan Mulvany also raised white flags from play for the visitors, while Cathal Finnegan tagged on a free but time was running out for the them. The sides traded points to close out the game as it somewhat petered out to it’s inevitable conclusion. Robbie Finnegan accounted for that last Seneschalstown score as they fell for the first time first in the League this season on a day where there can be arguments made as to who were deserving victors. Seneschalstown must regroup quickly ahead of the visit to Dunderry on Tuesday evening.
