Seneschalstown’s U-16’s had their 2nd outing in this year’s Spring League with another tough away game but this time to St Oliver’s in Moylagh. The team had a number of players returning having missed the opening game with the likes of Conor Dunne and Tom Smith adding strength to the panel which was crucial for this tough encounter. There was still a number missing through injury such as Ben Coffey, Seanie Dalton and Oisín McEvoy, but a strong team fielded.

Seneschalstown’s U-16’s had their 2nd outing in this year’s Spring League with another tough away game but this time to St Oliver’s in Moylagh. The team had a number of players returning having missed the opening game with the likes of Conor Dunne and Tom Smith adding strength to the panel which was crucial for this tough encounter. There was still a number missing through injury such as Ben Coffey, Seanie Dalton and Oisín McEvoy, but a strong team fielded.
Seneschalstown started brightly and after just 3 minutes Liam Maguire rounded his marker and opened the scoring with a pile driver to the back of the St Oliver’s net after great work out the field from Owen Mullen, Cillian Lawlor, Woodley Nicholson and Ben Kearney. This was followed by 2 well taken points from Donal Commons and Kit Waddington before Commons got on the end of a great ball in from Aaron Traynor on the wing to punch to the back of the Oliver net. This gave the away side a great start, but St Oliver’s kept tagging on points of their own, leaving little between the sides.
Once again, the game was played at frantic pace and the Seneschalstown defence were winning their battles with Zach Sheridan, Conor Dunne and Dylan Geraghty in the full back line particularly impressive and with Conor McDonnell, Tom Smith, Owen Mullan and Will Finnegan breaking forward from defence at every opportunity to set up attacks. When a shot from Kit Waddington dropped short into the goal keeper’s hands, Liam Maguire pounced on the goalkeeper’s error to make a great block and the ball rebounded into the net for another goal just before half time. This left Seneschalstown 6 points ahead at the interval – St Oliver’s 0-06 Seneschalstown 3-03.
St Oliver’s opened the scoring in the 2nd half with 2 quick points before scores from Kit Waddington and a majestic goal from Ben Kearney again with his left foot, quickly followed by another point from Ben, as well as Aaron Traynor who worked hard throughout and from Donal Commons.
With 10 minutes remaining Woodley Nicholson was on the receiving end of heavy tackles and eventually had to leave the field as a result of these and for this last 10 minutes St Oliver’s attacked time and time again but the Seneschalstown defence stood strong and although the North Meath amalgamation did get two goals once again some of the shot stopping from Cathal Darby was top drawer and indeed these saves were the difference in the end, as well as his flawless kick outs throughout the game.
These Seneschalstown lads had to battle to the end in order to get the win but battle they did and they showed great character throughout against a physically stronger St Oliver’s team and again were delighted to come away with a four point win.
