Reserve Cup Division 2 Group A Round 1
Seneschalstown 2-11 St. Patrick’s 4-07
Seneschalstown were left to rue a poor showing in the opening half which cost them in this Reserve Cup game on Tuesday evening. Despite registering the opening score, Seneschalstown conceded 3-6 on the bounce before half time leaving them fourteen points in arrears.
That score came early on from the boot of Seán Davis inside two minutes but Seneschalstown struggled into the wind for the remainder of the half.
After making a number of switches at half-time to give lads a run out and also in a bid to get back into things, Seneschalstown were hoping to make a fast start. However, the opposite was the case as Seneschalstown found themselves having to pick the ball out of the back of the net within seconds of the restart and the gap was extended to seventeen points and that became one more with another St. Patrick’s point
Seneschalstown did get their act together in the second period and the moment that inspired them was also a piece of history from the boot of Seán Commons. The midfielder became the first Seneschalstown player to kick a two point score in competitive fare under the new rules. He was on target with a single point effort again minutes later and momentum was really behind the Furze men when substitute Jack Frayne pulled on a loose ball which found the bottom corner.
Seneschalstown were keen to build on this and when another substitute Mark Fox got on the end of a move and left the goalkeeper with no chance thanks to a stunning finish into the top left corner.
Commons kicked another single point free before he made the most of the 50 metre dissent rule by bring a free outside the new arc to kick another two pointer for the home side. Further points from starting net minder Luke Healy, who by this stage had moved outfield and Mark Fox left four points between the sides but unfortunately time ran out on the home side as their miraculous comeback attempt just fell short. Seneschalstown hit the road for their second game in the competition away to St. Colmcille’s.
