Meath Senior Ladies Coca Cola Championship Round 3
Seneschalstown 1-13 Na Fianna 3-05
After a dark and wet evening in Sean Newman Park, Bohermeen more befit of a November evening rather than the midst Summer of July the Seneschalstown Ladies survived a late revival from Na Fianna to claim their second victory in Round 3 of the Meath Senior Coca Cola Championship 2015.
Na Fianna got off to a brightly start taking the game to Senescalstown kicking the opening point in the first minute, following up with a second in the third minute. The Enfield outfit had begun very strongly, dominating possession in the opening salvo. It took the Furze Girls several minutes to register their opening score but the warning signs were evident and soon the Seneschalstown girls bore down on the Na Fianna goal when Kiah Geraghty buried the ball to the net after fine work from Siabhra Reilly and Louise Coyle. Amy Gilsenan then almost added a second goal after a fine move, again involving Geraghty and Stacy Grimes.
In defence Adele Carolan made a fantastic block turning defence into attack and was unlucky not to score a point. After good work Kiah Geraghty pointed as she was being fouled but with advantage being played, the score stood leaving it being Seneschalstown 1-01 Na Fianna 0-02 after sixteen minutes. A fine Na Fianna move down the wing resulted in a great save by Lisa Mullen to deny them a goal but they were to register a fine point with the next attack.
Seneschalstown began to dominate the next ten minutes with points from Geraghty, Grimes and Amy Gilsenan went unanswered. Na Fianna eventually managed to stop the rot when getting a point but it was the Furze Girls who finished the first half the stronger with points from Gilsenan and Coyle. A dominant display from midfielder Edel McGrane was rewarded with a point in the twenty eight minute followed by another excellent point from Amy Gilsenan leading into half time which left the scoreboard at the interval reading Seneschalstown 1-08 Na Fianna 1-03.
With conditions worsening, ball handling was getting more and more difficult but the second half began with another fine point from the influential Geraghty. Edel McGrane and Siohban Sheridan were doing great work in midfield tracking back and helping out their defence with tireless running. Such tracking back by McGrane resulted in a turnover of possession resulting in another point for Geraghty. From the restart possession was won again and after some fantastic passes a goal chance was sent just inches wide by Coyle.
A thirteen minute spell without any score was finally broken when Amy Gilsenan popped over a fine point followed by a well taken free from Stacy Grimes putting eight points between the teams with nine minutes left. Na Fianna lost a player to growing indiscipline which the ref was being subjected to but this seemed to lift them who began to attack with more vigour resulting in a goal in the fifty third minute. Two minutes later again possession was lost due to slippery conditions and this resulted in another well finished goal for Na Fianna, a score which now left the game delicately poised at Seneschalstown 1-12 Na Fianna 3-04. With their backs up Na Fianna struck another fine point reducing the margin to the minimum and with all the momentum now.
However, calmness under pressure is what these girls from the Furze know and instead of defending Natasha Mullen, their flying half back found herself surging down the pitch to score a fantastic point with full time fast approaching. Experience and youth is a fine trait of this young Seneschalstown team and they showed great maturity to retain possession until the final whistle sounded.
Navan O’Mahoneys will provide the next test as these girls continue to develop and improve. All support would be greatly appreciated…
