In a game played in absolutely atrocious weather conditions Seneschalstown’s U-13 girls succumbed to a physically stronger Skryne team in the Division 2 final on Saturday in Ashbourne on a scoreline of 3-02 to 1-04.

In a game played in absolutely atrocious weather conditions Seneschalstown’s U-13 girls succumbed to a physically stronger Skryne team in the Division 2 final on Saturday in Ashbourne on a scoreline of 3-02 to 1-04.
Playing the 1st half into the teeth of the wind and driving rain the girls struggled and failed to score with Kellie Smith coming very close to two goals but unfortunately narrowly missing. The side were still well in contention when trailing by 1-02 to 0-00 at half time with the girls working extremely hard to keep Skryne just to three scores.
As the second half started Skryne got off to a perfect start scoring a goal to put them 2-02 to 0-00 ahead. With the introduction of Aoibhe Monaghan and Mallaidh Breen the fightback began with Mallaidh Breen finding the roof of the net from a Monaghan pass. With two points from Sorcha Gough there was now only a kick of a ball between the teams.
Skryne pressed very hard and only for some outstanding saves by Shauna Gordon the scoreline would have read much different. With such pressure a Skryne eventually scrambled a goal in.
With five minutes left another brace of points from Gough reduced the margin but unfortunately time was against Seneschalstown. A huge effort was put in the match against such elements and the girls deserve immense credit for battling right to the end. This defeat is a bitter pill to swallow for these girls as they have lost several finals now to this strong Skryne team who have come out on top narrowly each time and questionably remain in Division 2.
With the spirit the girls showed it will not be long before they begin winning these finals as they have been imperious all year.
The girls from Yellow Furze and Kentstown have both qualified for the Cumann na mBunscol finals in the next few weeks. This is a fantastic achievement for both schools and both deserve great support so best of luck to all and well done on a great year. Qualification for these finals is further evidence of the fantastic work being done in both schools in encouraging their pupils to play Gaelic Football and we are indebted to these teachers.
