U-14 Division 2 League Semi-Final
Oldcastle 2-06 Seneschalstown 7-09
Seneschalstown’s U-14 girls are going from strength to strength and qualified for the Division 2 Final after putting in a power packed performance to beat a very strong Oldcastle team who beat the girls only six weeks ago. It was a wet and windy Sunday evening in Oldcastle which isn’t the easiest place to come away with the spoils but it didn’t stop this very gutsy side.
The first half began at a blistering pace with both teams knowing a place in the final of the League was on the line and both teams delivered. Sinéad McLarney opened the scoring with a nice point and after a probing run from midfield, Caragh Monaghan’s persistence paid off when being awarded a penalty. Kellie Smith duly converted drilling the ball low and hard onto the bottom of the net. Oldcastle responded and looked very dangerous going forward scoring a goal and two points in reply. Mallaidh Breen hit the back of the net again as did Sinéad McLarney bringing the score to 3-01 to 1-02 in favour of the Furze Girls.
Oldcastle kept having the answers though continued to rack up the scores with another goal and two points. They then were awarded a penalty and after captain Shauna Gordon had brilliantly saved the first attempt the referee ordered it to be retaken. Second time around Shauna once more proved up to the task by saving at a crucial stage when Oldcastle were beginning to seize control. The girls lifted by the saves attacked with vigour and Mallaidh Breen popped over a free and a lovely point from the very influential Aisha Ogunyemi brought the game to half time with only a point between the sides in a very entertaining game, Oldcastle 2-05 Seneschalstown 3-03
A game of two halves is surely what we got as Seneschalstown dominated the affair in the second half when aided by the wind. Super sub introduced at half time, Ava Jane Ryan led by example scoring a fabulous goal. Three points from Mallaidh Breen, Ava Jane Ryan and Caragh Monaghan followed before Ms. Ryan buried her second goal to the net. Lovely points followed from Sorcha Gough, Aisha Ogunyemi and Ava Jane Ryan before Ms. Ryan scored her hat trick of goals. This gave her a personal tally of three goals and two points after only coming on at half time!
Oldcastle managed only one point in the second half thanks to the superb defending from Aoibhe Monaghan, Leanne Clarke and Lauren McCarthy who were dominating the half back line. Tight battles were been won on the inside line led by Aoife Mulvany, Aine Nangle and Aoife Darby which helped keep Oldcastle out. Leah Ryan and Caragh Monaghan were winning the midfield and sending great ball into the forward line. Lauren Donnelly was very busy setting up the inside line cleverly interacting with the midfielders and the centre half forward Sorcha Gough. Kim Rice came on as a corner forward and was very unlucky not to score when seeing her shot cannon back off the crossbar. Mallaidh Breen who is showing a keen eye for goal closed out the scoring with another three pointer.
When the final whistle blew, the girls were thrilled to win and find themselves in a League Final against the mighty St. Colmcilles. That match promises to be a cracker based on their previous encounters and all support would be welcome to shout on these wonderful ambassadors for the club.
