Waterways Environmental Ltd. Football League Division 10 Round 4
Seneschalstown 2-15 Longwood 2-14
Seneschalstown made it back to back wins in the Waterways Environmental Ltd. Division 10 Football League with a victory by the narrowest of margins over Longwood in a thrilling game in Fr. Tully Park on Tuesday night. After the early evening heavy showers cleared off, the game was played on a damp surface in the low sunlight. Longwood travelled with only 14 players so the game was played at 14 a side but despite the lack of substitutes Longwood were very competitive throughout.
Longwood were first on the scoreboard with a goal and a couple of point in the opening ten minutes after Seneschalstown had squandered some scoring opportunities of their own. Seneschalstown’s opening score of the game just before the quarter hour mark when Teean Cummins was successful with a two pointer from outside the arc. Two further points for the visitors increased their advantage before David Fox got Seneschalstown’s second point 17 minutes in.
Liam Maguire and Cummins added to the Seneschalstown tally but this was equalled at the other end with two white flags for the ‘Wood. Five down after 25 minutes, Seneschalstown finished the half strongly with 1-01. Firstly Jamie Barry kicked a fine individual point from distance before Owen Mullen smartly finished to the net to leave one point between the sides at the interval, 1-08 to 1-07 in Longwood’s favour.
After introducing a couple of substitutes by this stage, Seneschalstown started the second half with a spring in their step. Charles McCarthy and Niall McCabe kicked early points to turn around the deficit and put Seneschalstown in front for the first time. Longwood offered a brief riposte with a point but three further scores from Jamie Barry, Charles McCarthy and the inform Owen Mullen gave Seneschalstown some breathing room for the first time.
A Longwood two pointer kept them very much in touch but Seneschalstown looked like pushing for home as the game entered the final quarter. When Charles McCarthy got the ball at the end of a quick counter he had only one job left, and he did that by rounding the goalkeeper to finish to the net. Mattie Cowley and Jamie Barry left Seneschalstown seven to the good with nine minutes left but Longwood launched a late comeback yielding 1-03 to reduce the gap to one point, but Seneschalstown held firm in the final attack to secure the victory
After another accomplished display which included a point of his own, Liam Maguire picked up his second Man of the Match award from Mick Dillon.
