Seneschalstown recorded their first win of the AFL Div1 for the year with a hard earned victory over neighbours Walterstown on Sunday.
It was also the first Senior match to be played on the new Seneschalstown pitch and hopefully a sign of things to come having not being able to play a home match for a number of seasons now. Unfortunately weather conditions of very strong winds, spoilt the game as a footballing spectacle but nonetheless it was a competitive physical match, as both sets of players tried their hardiest to gain the upper hand.
Seneschalstown played against a strong wind in the first-half and although they did not score even though they created enough chances, managed to keep Walterstown to only 3 points through resolute defending and some poor finishing.
Seneschalstown resumed smartly after the break but again poor finishing let Walterstown off the hook. A free kick taken by Stephen Sheridan from 35 yards out was poorly defended by Walterstown and ended in the back of the net to bring Seneschalstown level. Seneschalstown followed up this score with a quick point from Shane Clarke, before some good play from Stephen Sheridan and Davey Byrne allowed substitute Michael Mullen in for a second goal which was calmly executed into the roof of the net. Stephen Sheridan finished off the scoring with a point from a free.
Walterstown did not created much in the second half and rarely got the ball pass the Seneschalstown half back line and were held scoreless. They did have a few scoring chances near the very end to reduce the winning margin but again bad finishing let them down.
These 2 will meet again in the group stages of the SFC and it will surely be another tight tough match as it always is.
