Round 5 in the Meath Senior Ladies league was a repeat of the 2009 championship final when Seneschalstown and St Ultans faced each other on Tuesday evening. It was a game between the two known sporting rivals in Meath ladies football. This game had it in the making to be a great test for both teams to see are they poised to meet again this year…?
Then Seneschalstown got off the mark with a great goal from the boot of the formidable Fiona Mahon. Seneschalstown squandered a lot of good possession in the first 15 minutes of the game by kicking a few wides. St. Ultans replied well points from Elaine Duffy and Geraldine Doherty. They got another point then to level the game. Sarah Crosby was pulled down in St. Ultan’s square and this left Louise Mc Keever to step up to the mark for the penalty kick. She faced Irene Munnelly in goals and had a great kick of the ball, to sail it over the bar. Shortly after this the ball was kicked cross field to an unmarked Aoife Sheridan who made a fine catch and then side stepped the goalie to kick the ball into the back of the net. There were some great spells of football from both teams in this first half and the scores at half time were 0-7 to 2-3, giving the travelling team of Seneschalstown two points up.
The opening period of the second half was a fine display of football from Senechasltown and Fiona Mahon, showing all at Martry, what a scoring machine she can be with 1-6 from her boot (two of those scores were frees). The balls being given to her, were from fantastic fielding in midfield by Mary Sheridan and Stephanie Byrne, and then easy to convert into scores. Grainne Nulty then fisted a goal from a dropping free of Fiona’s. This left it very hard for St Ultans to come back at and they only scored two points in this spell. Best for Seneschalstown were: Mena Sheridan, Louise Mc Keever, Stephanie Byrne, Mary Sheridan, Fiona Mahon, Eimear O’Carroll and Grainne Nulty.
