Seneschalstown 2-12 Na Fianna 1-2
Seneschalstown overcame a youthful Na Fianna outfit in this Coca Cola Junior C championship played in damp conditions in Fr Tully Park on Thursday evening.
Early exchanges were even and it was Emer Smith who opened the scoring from play in the fourth minute. Two minutes later Kelly Smith doubled the home sides lead and Emer added her second point shortly afterwards. The next eleven minutes proved fruitless for both teams and after a few wayward efforts from the home team, Grace Cahalane scored a point from play on eighteen minutes. Aoife Sheehy was next on the score sheet with a point from play in the twentieth minute and Na Fianna opened their account a minute later. On twenty-three minutes Sheehy added to her tally. The first goal arrived in the twenty fourth minute when Lucinda Healy dispatched the ball to the corner of the net but Na Fianna hit back immediately with a goal of their own. An Emer Smith free on the stroke of half time sent the home team to the break leading 1-07 to 1-01.
After the resumption, Na Fianna applied a lot of pressure on the Seneschalstown rear-guard but their only reward was a point in the thirty-ninth minute. Sheehy was denied a goal with an excellent save from the Na Fianna net minder but had her goal in the forty second minute when after a long delivery from Aoife Lenehan, Sheehy beat the keeper to the ball soccer style before slotting home. Emer Smyth added points from play and a free in the forty sixth and seventh minutes before Lenehan added to the tally following a fine run from midfield. Emer Smith closed out the scoring with two further points from play to give the home side a deserved win on the night. Next up in Round 5 is Simonstown away.
The Seneschalstown rear-guard of Elaine Byrne, Dearbhla Clarke, Laura Wall, Catherine Smith, Debbie Mangan and Grace Cahalane were performing well backed up between the sticks by Linda Quinn, thrown in at the deep end as a late replacement for Lisa Darby who suffered an injury before the start. The Midfield duo of Aoife Lenehan and Laura Burke were winning a lot of possession around the middle as well as tracking back and supporting the forwards when required. As well as getting scores, one pleasing aspect from the forwards of Niamh Connolly, Emer Smith, Shirley Quinn, Kelly Smith, Lucinda Healy and Aoife Sheehy was their willingness to tackle and try to dispossess the visitors defenders making their exit from defence as difficult as possible.
Seneschalstown: Linda Quinn, Elaine Byrne, Dearbhla Clarke, Laura Wall, Catherine Smith, Debbie Mangan, Grace Cahalane (0-1), Aoife Lenehan (0-1), Laura Burke, Shirley Quinn, Emer Smith(0-6), Niamh Connolly, Aoife Sheehy (1-3), Lucinda Healy (1-0), Kelly Smith (0-1).
