Reserve Cup Round 2

Seneschalstown 2-11 Dunshaughlin 0-04

Seneschalstown picked up their first win in the Reserve Cup following a comfortable win at home to Dunshaughlin on Sunday morning.

It was the visitors who got the first score of the hour two minutes in, but that would be the only time they would lead over the course of the hour. Robbie Finnegan pulled Seneschalstown level with the first of his four points in the 6th minute, and the hosts would hit the front through Johnny Gilsenan on 11 minutes, fresh from his two point salvo for the Senior team on Friday night.

From this point on, Seneschalstown would take total control. Darren O’Brien increased the lead with a fine point from distance, and Séimí Byrne would get himself forward for a point before Dunshaughlin registered their second score in the 17th minute.

Jamie Kirwan, lining out in the unfamiliar position of centre forward, got his first point of the game in the 23rd minute, to which Dunshaughlin would answer similarly almost immediately. Seneschalstown though, produced a strong finish to the half.

Firstly, Eddie Meade got on the end of good move to produce a powerful finish low to the bottom left corner for Seneschalstown’s first goal of the game. Kirwan followed up when he beautifully curled over a free from the 21 wide on the right and substitute Joey Moore, on for the injured Gilsenan, took a point when there may have been half a goal chance on. Robbie Finnegan rounded out the scoring for the half with one last point, leaving Seneschalstown eight to the good at the break, 1-08 to 0-03.

The second half was certainly a scrappy affair with the scoring rate dropping considerably. Half-time substitute David Fox made an immediate impact when clipping over a tidy point.
Robbie Finnegan added another free five minutes later to stretch the lead to double figures.

Indeed, Seneschalstown made sure of the win in the 40th minute when Joey Moore flicked a ball over the top beyond the keeper and into the net. Despite this, the last 20 minutes were lacking goalmouth action at both ends, with both sides managing a point each, Finnegan responsible for Seneschalstown’s effort with a free.

The result keeps the team in contention for a knockout place where they will play host to Skryne in the final group game next Sunday. It also caps a fine weekend for the club in the pitch, picking up wins in both Cup competitions.
