Meath Ladies U-14 Division 1 Championship Round 6

Simonstown 2-07 Seneschalstown 4-10

On a very warm evening for football on Monday the Furze girls powered on in the Division 1 championship securing the points against a determined challenge from the hosts Simonstown.

Mallaidh Breen settled early nerves by finding the back of the net after only 3 minutes on the clock followed by a well worked point from Caragh Monaghan who was receiving assistance from her midfield partner Lauren Donnelly. Full forward Sinead McLarney popped over another point from play with good assistance from her two corner forwards Niamh Traynor and Ava Jane Ryan. Ella Kilfeather and Orla Finnegan on the wings were causing Simonstown problems but with a physically bigger team they began to impose themselves and kicking over their first point from a free. Ava Jane scored a fine point from a dead ball before the north side girls cancelled out this score. Again Caragh Monaghan scored a fine point and Mallaidh Breen put some more daylight between the teams with another good point. Simonstown turned up the heat on the Seneschalstown rear-guard and finished the half with all the momentum by kicking 3 unanswered points. The furze girls were now beginning to show effects of a busy schedule and the heat.

Half Time
Simonstown 0-5
Seneschalstown 1-5

The furze girls regrouped and goalkeeper Robyn Murray was switched to corner forward to add some threat to their attack. Replacing her in goals was Lauren McCarthy who had been injured with Meath the previous weekend but showed great spirit and courage that this team is all about by stepping into the breach. Sinead McLarney eased nerves scoring a point which renewed the girl’s belief and Ava Jane Ryan fired to the net shortly after Simonstown responded with two points but with Aine Nangle standing tall at full back ably assisted by Sadhbh McLarney who was given the task of man marking Simonstown county star Caoimhe Leddy and the powerhouse of Caoimhe Dunne the full back line was not being breached too easily. However, the Simonstown girls broke through, eventually scoring past McCarthy into the net and they were back in the game. Simonstown 1-07 Seneschalstown 2-06.

Launching attacks from the half back line Aoibhé Monaghan Zoe Kirwan and the industrious Anna Wogan powered forward and that lady again Mallaidh Breen found the net for Seneschalstown 3rd goal and her 2nd for the evening. A remarkable game she was enjoying despite playing for her school earlier in the day and Simonstown ace defender Orla Conlon paying close attention to her. Ava Jane Ryan again answered the call by scoring two more points to make Seneschalstown go 3-08 to 1-07 ahead. With ten minutes to go Simonstown were awarded a penalty that was dispatched clinically, breathing renewed life into the host team. However, Robyn Murray was having none of it and rattled the net and following up with a point to regain the cushion. Donnelly hit the post with a great effort before Orla Finnegan pointed to finish off the scoring.

The final whistle sounded much to the relief of the exhausted troops who refused to give up. Aine Nangle in defence was strong and deserves great plaudits for her safe hands but to single out anybody would not do justice to the incredible team spirit that these young girls have. Their fight, passion and determination is infectious and their adventure in Division 1 goes on with this victory securing home advantage in the Semi Final place in this year’s championship. We dare to dream.
