Premier FC Division 4 Round 1
Seneschalstown 4-7 Moynalvey 6-11
Seneschalstown’s defence of the Premier Football Championship Division 4 title ultimately began in defeat to a strong Moynalvey on Sunday afternoon. The visitors were able to field a number of players who have been featuring for their Senior side and this was in evidence from the get go.
Moynalvey had two points on the board before Ross Howard opened Seneschalstown’s account for the day. Another 1-04 unbroken followed for the away side by the 16th minute but a quick fire 1-01 gave Seneschalstown a small foothold in the game.
Stephen Finnegan scored point from play, which was followed up by a goal from Tom McDonnell. McDonnell did really well to get up the pitch and finish to the net despite the best efforts of the Moynalvey keeper. Seneschalstown managed another 1-01 before the break, Jack Owens pointing and Owen Mullen finding the bottom left hand corner after a brilliant pass over the top of the defence.
However, Moynalvey continued their dominance and lead 2-10 to 2-03 at the break. Seneschalstown’s cause was not helped after one of their players received his marching orders for an incident when a free had been awarded.
Although the second was a more even affair, Moynalvey were able to keep a big distance between themselves and their hosts. Stephen Finnegan converted a penalty for Seneschalstown after Liam Maguire was felled close to goal. In a three minute spell in the final quarter, Seneschalstown managed three points on the trot. Ross Howard clipped over his second point of the afternoon, which was backed up by a point from Cillian Gormley before Owen Mullen scored an excellent point from long range. Seneschalstown’s last two scores came courtesy of Liam Maguire and Teean Cummins, Maguire doing really well to sidestep a defender finish to the bottom right hand corner of the net, Cummins raising a white flag to round off the Seneschalstown scoring. Despite the improved second half on the scoring front for Seneschalstown, Moynalvey added 4-01 to their tally leaving the final score reading 6-11 to 4-07 in their favour.
A special word for Ryan Finnegan and Tom McDonnell. Ryan started in all three games for our adult teams this weekend, playing outfield for our Seniors and Juniors before stepping up today to play in goals today. Even more impressively, he played all bar 10 minutes in total of those three games. Tom was without doubt our best player on the day, winning numerous kickouts, making a number of strong tackles and capping it off with a goal for himself.
