Seneschalstown 2-08 Skryne 3-15

The curtain came down on Seneschalstown’s 2014 league campaign in a rain sodden Fr. Tully Park on Sunday at lunchtime. In weather that a dog would not be put out in a much changed team from that which drew with finalists Na Fianna only a week previously were left to rue an eleven minute spell at the commencement of the second half when Skryne hit them for three goals and seven points as Seneschalstown simply could find no answer to the onslaught which they faced.

The Yellow Furze men had opened the match very brightly and found themselves three points to the good after two minutes courtesy of a Joe Sheridan brace from play and one from Jonathan Gilsenan. Sheridan notched his first after Damien Sheridan had intercepted a loose hand pass in midfield while Joe set Gilsenan up for his effort with an intelligent foot pass.

Skryne then hit four points on the bounce including one from out near the right corner from Meath goalkeeper Paddy O’Rourke who today operated at full forward. Joe Sheridan then kicked another from play before tapping over a thirteen metre free after receiving a slight nudge in the back as the ball was being played into him. James Meade extended the home side’s advantage to two points after nineteen minutes when curling an effort over the bar.

There was to be no further scores until the twenty eight minute when Skryne narrowed the margin to one point before they tied the affairs up on the verge of half time at six points apiece and the game delicately poised.

During the half time interval conditions continued to worsen as the rain teemed down and Skryne suddenly found themselves on a roll. After winning the ball from the throw in they managed to find the net after only nineteen seconds before quickly tagging on two points from play. In the thirty fifth minute they once more rattled the back of the Seneschalstown goal and then followed this score up with another point. Their golden spell continued with a thirty eight minute goal from play and then four further points, two of which arrived from placed balls.

Midfielder Damien Sheridan, now operating at full forward in a switch with Joe managed to register Seneschalstown’s first score in twenty three minutes when reacting quickest to get a toe to the loose ball and divert it to the Skryne net after a long range free from Brian Sheridan hit the crossbar. The Tara men replied almost immediately with a point before Ross Howard’s goal bound shot was adjudged by referee Jason Smith to have been footblocked. From the resultant penalty Brian Sheridan sent the Skryne goalkeeper the wrong way as he rolled the penalty into the right corner of the goal.

As they had done after the first Seneschalstown goal Skryne replied almost instantaneously with a point. Joe Sheridan then scored what was the home outfit’s best score of the day when firing high over the bar with his left foot after rising highest in the centre of the field to pluck the ball out of the darkened sky. James Meade then brought the scoring for the day to a close with his second of the day.

On a day where their hopes of a top half of the table finish in the league were washed away Seneschalstown can look reflect upon the first senior starts for promising minors Mark Fox and Adam Carey as well as the return to action of Joe Cowley as promising signs.
