Meath A League Division 1 Round 2
Duleek/Bellewstown 1-16 Seneschalstown 2-05
On February 14th in the year 269 a Roman priest called Valentine was sentenced to death by a beating and then beheading. 1,746 years later on the day now known as St. Valentines Day the Senior footballers of Seneschalstown were sentenced to a league defeat by neighbours Duleek/Bellewstown as their hopes of picking up two points under the excellent Duleek floodlights were cut off at the knees.
With six changes in personnel from their opening game in the league due to a number of players being unavailable for selection the resources available to the Yellow Furze men were stretched from the outset. Throughout the sixty minutes the side struggled to get into a rhythm of play while Duleek/Bellewstown impressed throughout, playing with a pace which proved very difficult to contain.
From the outset of the game the visitors found themselves on the back foot as the Graham Geraghty managed side opened up a three point to no score lead with 10 minutes on the clock. A Joe Sheridan goal in the twelfth minute when he finished into the bottom left corner after being set up by Bryan Clarke suggested that a close game may be on the cards but from there to half time Duleek/Bellewstown went on a scoring spree, hitting a goal and eight points with Seneschalstown’s sole response coming courtesy of a Brian Sheridan pointed effort from play after he capitalised on some good play from Jonathan Gilsenan and Ross Howard. Indeed the margin between the two sides could have been greater were it not for goalkeeper Shane Corbally pulling off a fine save from an onrushing forward.
Two pointed frees from Brian Sheridan got the second half scoring underway before the home side replied from a placed ball. Damien Sheridan then kicked a trademark point off his right foot but the home sides riposte to this score was most impressive as they reeled off three points in two minutes.
The scoring rate dropped considerably in the final quarter with Duleek/Bellewstown adding a point to their total either side of a Howard point and a Brian Sheridan penalty which he converted at the second attempt after being deemed to have struck his initial effort before the referee had blown his whistle.
