U-17 League Division 4 Round 2

Seneschalstown 1-18 St. Cuthberts 1-12

Seneschalstown backed up their opening round victory over North Meath Gaels when accounting for St. Cuthberts by six points in Fr. Tully Park on Sunday evening following a very good team display. In front from almost the first minute Seneschalstown could even afford to kick a multitude of wides such was the quantity of opportunities they created.

Shane Mulvany opened the home sides account inside the opening minute with Cathal Finnegan adding another a few minutes later after an early equaliser from St. Cuthberts. Dylan Doyle, returning from injury, added a point after some sloppy play from the Seneschalstown attackers. Niall Hickey added another a few moments later before Jason Kearney, impressing at corner forward, passed to Brian Maguire who raced along the end line before firing over the bar immediately after Hickeys score. Kearney then opened his account when finishing off a fine team move which was started by great tackling from Adam Carey who then played the ball down the line to Robert Wogan. Wogan then fed Kearney who exchanged a one two with Hickey before curling the ball over the bar off the right hand upright.

St. Cuthberts added a second point before Doyle got another again following great tacking from the tireless Carey. Adam Carey then kept the scoreboard ticking over when flashing a shot over the bar which was initially waved wide before being awarded. Wogan added a point from play then to bring the Seneschalstown scoring for the first half to a close before the visitors narrowed the deficit to five with two points, one of which came from play.

Just as he had done in the first half Shane Mulvany opened the scoring for the second when kicking over with only eighteen seconds on the clock after he latched onto a handpass from Cathal Finnegan who had gathered a well-placed ball from Carey. The playmaking abilities of Carey were on display shortly afterwards when he sprayed the ball out to the left where Robert Wogan took off before firing the ball high between the uprights. Within a minute Wogan had added to his account with another point from play before St. Cuthberts breathed life back into the match when finding the back of the net at the railway end. Seneschalstown hit back right away with another point when Wogan punted the ball over the bar after a blistering run and handpass to his right from Brian Maguire.

St. Cuthberts tagged on their fifth point of the match to keep their hopes alive and reduce the deficit to five before Seneschalstown hit them with a sucker punch of a goal. Niall Hickey fed Cathal Finnegan out on the right wing before the tricky Finnegan laid off to Jason Kearney, who in turn fed Hickey. The bustling midfielder hand passed across to Dylan Doyle whose effort was saved before Hickey finishing off what he had started was first to react to the rebound and fired high into the roof of the net.

Straight from the resultant kick out St. Cuthberts displayed their character when pointing before Wogan kicked a free following a foul on Carey as he burst forward. Shane Mulvany grabbed his third soon after, following more good work from Finnegan in riposte to another Cuthberts point. Finnegan then picked off the second point his hard work deserved when fielding what in another code would be described as a Garryowen from Doyle.

An excellent free off the carpet went over via the angle of bar and post for the Bohermeen parish outfit before Wogan capitalised on some great work from David Fox to extend the Seneschalstown advantage back out to nine. Three points from play in two minutes from St. Cuthberts saw them narrow the deficit before Wogan kicked his sixth point of the half after a good team move involving Carey, Fox and Doyle. With seven between the sides and three minutes left on the clock the game was as good as over but the youngsters from St. Cuthberts kept plugging away and were rewarded with the final score of the match.
