Senior Ladies Feis Cup Semi-Final:
Seneschalstown 1-23 (26) St. Ultans 0-03 (3)
A wet and windy Donore was the venue for this much anticipated Feis Cup Semi-Final fixture between this year’s championship finalists Seneschalstown and St. Ultans.
Although conditions were far from perfect, the same couldn’t be said for the playing surface of St Marys GFC, despite playing this fixture towards the end of the season the ground was in excellent condition.
With St. Ultans unable to field the full allocation of players both teams lined up with thirteen players, adopting a two player full forward/defence line.
The Furze Ladies started with many fringe players taking to the field in a much changed line up to that of their Leinster semi-final defeat just five days previous. Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half it didn’t take the Seneschalstown Ladies long to register their first of many first half points. They found themselves five points to the good before their opponents could draw a breath. With some fine moves and good link up play the Furze outfit took a strangle hold on the game that they wouldn’t relinquish until the final whistle.
Ultans had a chance to get back into the game in the first fifteen minutes when they were awarded a penalty, however Elaine Duffy blasted her effort too high and over instead of under Lisa Mullen’s bar to register just the 1 point, in fact this would be their only score of the first half. In stark contrast Seneschalstown’s forwards were on fire in the first half with inspiration coming in the form of Aishling Taaffe, Kiah Geraghty and Siabhra Reilly. Stacey Grimes was also very dependable with her free taking, especially with the tricky windy conditions.
If the first half was a story of Seneschalstown’s emerging talent, then the second half was all about experience. Edel McGrane replaced Adelle Carolan and showed what has made her such a formidable opponent, tirelessly working hard for her team in the middle of the field and aiding her teammates on every attack. Five minutes into the second half Fiona O’Rourke made her season debut much to the pleasure of her teammates who gave her a rousing cheer from the side-line, and it didn’t take long for the former All Star nominee to chalk up her first of three points.
With confidence now at a high level the Furze side added to their first half score line and finished the game off with a further goal and eight points to run out convincing winners and setup the chance to reclaim their title with a date, venue and opponents all to be decided.
