Having won thirteen of the previous fifteen Meath Ladies SFC titles, Seneschalstown’s hopes of adding win number fourteen were dashed by a clinical Oldcastle side on Saturday evening in bright but breezy Bective.

Having won thirteen of the previous fifteen Meath Ladies SFC titles, Seneschalstown’s hopes of adding win number fourteen were dashed by a clinical Oldcastle side on Saturday evening in bright but breezy Bective.
Oldcastle were full value for their victory as their ability to find the Seneschalstown net was telling at different stages of the contest. The North Meath girls troubled the scoreboard first, getting off the mark with a third minute free. However, both sides were guilty of some very erratic shooting in the early exchanges, hence the next score did not arrive until the eleventh minute as Stacey Grimes opened the defending champions account after a pass from Róisín Commons. Corner back Adelle Carolan was also very prominent in the lead up to this score. Five minutes later, the side in blue moved ahead for the first time, when Amy Gilsenan split the posts after fine work from Louise Coyle and Róisín Commons. That lead became two shortly afterwards as Coyle expertly fielded a high delivery from Aisling Taaffe, before swivelling and making no mistake with her effort.
But that score sprung Oldcastle to life as in the final eleven minutes of the half, they hit an unanswered 1-03 to move into a four point interval lead, 1-04 to 0-03. Oldcastle did not let up in their intensity and speed of movement in the second period, adding another white flag to their tally in the thirty second minute. Perhaps the games big moment arrived after thirty seven minutes, when Oldcastle found the Seneschalstown net for a second time, to extend their lead to eight points. Another Oldcastle point followed, before Stacey Grimes tapped over a close range free for Seneschalstown, after a foul on wing back Natasha Mullen, who was now operating further up the field.
Unfortunately from a Seneschalstown point of view, Oldcastle rattled the net for a third time and opened up a double figure gap, leaving Seneschalstown in a precarious position. Oldcastle added another 1-04, before Aoife Lenehan kicked Seneschalstown’s final point from play as they came up short on the day.
Seneschalstown have dominated this competition over the last number of years and have produced many big performances. The side is now sprinkled with new emerging stars who no doubt will be back challenging for county honours in the not too distant future.
